Lexus is a well-known luxury car brand or Toyota. But do you know what else Toyota builds? Yes, you’re right – luxury yachts. The Marine Business Department of Toyota Motor Corporation was founded in 1997. In fact, the Toyota Ponam line is the market-leader in the premium yacht industry in Japan. But Lexus is the luxury brand, so now it built its own vision of what a luxury yacht should be – and the LY 650 turned out great!
While Lexus is a luxury brand of Toyota, its cars are somewhat unique. Yes, they share a lot of parts with Toyota cars, but they have distinct chassis, bodies and design language. In fact, people see Lexus at the same level as BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Jaguar. It is not the first time Lexus has designed a yacht – that Marine Business Department of Toyota allows it to do that. But this latest expression of Lexus design on water just might be one of the coolest-looking yachts you will ever see.
Lexus Sport Yacht Concept was introduced last year. It was an open 42 foot (yachts are usually measured in feet) long concept and a lot of features from it have migrated into the new LY 650. In fact, huge interest in the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, which was powered by two 5.0l Lexus V8 engines, encouraged the Japanese luxury brand to create a new yacht featuring its signature design language L-finesse. The new LY 650 is not powered by Lexus engines – it has Volvo powerplants, made specifically for marine applications.
LY 650 is 65.5 feet (19.96 m) long and has a strong, pronounced bow. Accentuated aft hips give this yacht a bit of a sporty look, while curved deck accents just scream elegance. You may be thinking that LY 650 has no similarities to actual Lexus cars. But the brand says that viewed from profile the roofline of the yacht is distinctly Lexus. As well as some other design accents and the overall style. It is a Lexus for the sea.
LY 650 houses 6 people – that is how much room for sleeping there is. Its fuel capacity is 3,785 litres, which allows for pretty long adventures. Shigeki Tomoyama, executive vice president of Toyota, said that LY 650 project was fuelled by desire to “present a dream-like vision of the luxury lifestyle; one where the Lexus Yacht expands the potential of Lexus mobility to the ocean”. However, no information on price yet.
Yachts are expensive and people who buy them know that. There is a market for a Lexus Yacht, but we will have to wait and see how many of them will be built and what other marine concepts will follow after that.
