Nintendo’s Switch Online service launching September 18th

Nintendo has revealed when the Switch Online service will be available and guess what? It won’t be a long wait. The $20 per year subscription service will go live on September 18th (It will be the 19th in Europe), with a week-long free trial available from the eShop at launch. Other launch details are unknown right now, like which games will require a subscription to play.

We should get more details on that soon with a Direct presentation on the 13th scheduled for 6PM Eastern time. So you will get multiplayer access of course, but Nintendo is also offering 20 NES games with online play, cloud-based save game backups, dedicated Switch Online apps and you will also have access to “special offers” for members.

Just like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, this is about convincing gamers to pay a regular fee for internet services by offering some nice perks. It should be noted that Nintendo’s offering is less expensive than its rivals. Of course, it offers fewer features too. Switch owners should be happy about the news as multiplayer is just around the corner. In fact, it is less than a week away.

We will keep you posted as more news comes out.
